RINCON DE CAYA, BADAJOZ EXTREMA, SPAIN - FEBRUARY 01: Several tractors of Portuguese farmers cut the A6 highway near the border with Spain, on February 1, 2024, in Rincon de Caya, Badajoz, Extremadura, Spain. The protest is part of the mobilizations that are being repeated in other European countries to demand a review of the policies and regulations surrounding the sector. In Brussels, almost 1,500 tractors, bonfires and barricades take place in the center of the city, while the 27 are meeting for an Extraordinary European Council. The Civil Farmers' Movement has been the convener of the protest. In addition, blockades have also been promoted in other areas of Portugal, a day after the Portuguese government announced a 500 million euro aid package.

The EU plans to extend tariff-free entry for Ukrainian farm products for a year from June, but with "safeguards" to stop cheaper imports flooding the market at the expense of Europe's own farmers. Grain imports from war-torn Ukraine have already caused a standoff with Poland and become a major source of anger for farmers in several EU countries, staging roadblocks to demand better revenues and conditions.
