Gerhart, 59, survived the 2004 tsunami, but he lost his youngest daughter and one friend in Thailand. Thailand commemorates the 20th anniversary of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, which struck on 26 December 2004, triggered by a 9.2 magnitude earthquake in the Indian Ocean off the west coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia. The tsunami claimed over 220,000 lives, internally displaced more than half a million people, and left hundreds of thousands without livelihoods, according to the United Nations, making it one of the deadliest natural disasters in history.
